i want to tell (some of) you about these 2 cd's that i've been revisiting
since yesterday..off the bat, if you aren't one for adventures
in sound, don't bother reading anymore...you won't like these
    cds one bit..
now..one is by this british guy named
chris watson..the cd is called 'outside the circle of fire'....
it is fucking insane.....all immaculately recorded sounds of
animals from all over the place....i can't even begin to tell you
how wicked this audio document is....you ever heard a funkin'
hippotamai emerging from a river at dusk?
what does it sound like??? ....>>>FUCKED UP.
the second is by the illest old lady in sound art.
maryanne amacher...the cd is called 'sound characters'..
and it too is fucking so totally mindblowing. she's renowned
for doing these sound installations all over the world, mostly
in really wicked 'sites' as in large old houses or whatever..
the cd is basically a feeble attempt to capture her sound installations...
she's devised sound that actually creates what she
calls 'third ear music'...the tones and volume she uses in her
installations make the mechanics of your inner ear vibrate to
the point that your ear actually produces a tone itself, and it literally
'pours out of your ear' while her sound washes over you as you
walk around the site. so wicked. buy this cd and crank as loud
    as possible.

i've never been into a tower records store in my life.
my advice is: if you live in a fairly large city, pull
out the phone book and call some of the smaller
little record shops and ask them. if they don't
know, ask them if they carry experimental and avant garde stuff.
if they say yes, then chances are they'll order this
stuff for you. if they say no.....there's always online ordering.

as far as this stuff on mp3....NO.
this is high high quality audio stuff. dl'ing this shit is the worst
thing you could do for this type of music. but if you must,
    make sure its loud:)

Okay, so my husband says "I think that is just some weird ass shit". Now I think it would be cool in person at an installation, but over speakers in front of my computer is mildly irritating.

Oh yeah, that is in regard to Sound Characters.

see...this is what i'm talking about. you can't put this stuff through a shitty
pair of computer speakers, even a good pair.....i'm betting you've heard one
of the tracks thats all beeps and bleeps, sinewave tones and stuff?
or did you hear one that was more menacing sort of ambience?
even on a nice stereo you aren't getting the real deal...

  11. Which brings as in front of a HUGE technical issue that all artists deal with at somepoint.
Do you proceed on putting your work on the market when 95% of the buyers cant view it properly?

true.......as far as i know she's pretty disappointed with the cd...
this is the first document of her sound in 30 some years.....
precisely becuz of the limitations of recording and consumer
    electronic playback...

  13. Thats the thing with experimental stuff i guess, how do you document them after their done?
I aint dissing at all i'm sure her work is at least interesting.
But what is it the stays when she's gone?
If she sells her work (or part) at a museum then maybe the whole project could be repeated, but you know how museums work these days$$$. I see a DVD as the best it gets.
    (yes i'm bored);)
