classes on graff? now that is fucked up, anyone who takes that class to learn graffiti is automaticly a toy and doesn't deserve the right to hold a can.

It might not be so bad if it were a history class and they touched on graffiti since it is the oldest form of art, the fact they'd acknoledge it is nice, rather than just rag on it. But still the modern graff scene ought to remain underground, that's a big part of the culture.

So, what about Graff workshops? That could be classed as a educational tool for people to learn how to piece. Times are changing and personally I am for kids comming up to learn with older more established writers. Its all about Graff evolving.

graff workshops? no i don't think so. the reason being, graff is probobly the only american folk art left. once you start having instruction and institutionalizing it, that is lost. its so much more raw when kids see it and teach themselves, or have a personal mentor. signing up at the local Y to learn about graff just disturbs me

You got me there Dyptheria...

I guess the "essence" is lost once you start institutionalizing it, I suppose its like comparing it to the comercialised fashion labels and their "Graff" inspired clothing lines. But my concern is some kids have no other avenues. I for one taught myself everthing I know and not having a mentor meant It became harder for me to get to a level with my work that I was happy with because there was so much knowlege I had missed out on. But the coin is two sided and this also made me more confident in my self because I knew could prove to my citys writers that I could get up independently with my own knowlege and perspective on things.

I just read this and it made no sense what so ever... Ah Forgeddaboudit!!

youthful ignorance is SO refreshing... and it makes it so much easier to ignore the volume of OG Kings that spent time in Rhode Island...

Of course, it IS way less raw if you climb the crane with an art school diploma in your pocket...

I understand what you're saying anon, but like you said you're self tought. Most graff writers learn the mijority of what they do through experience, given everyone picks stuff up from others but no one really big in the scene ever took a course on it. I personally think a lot of respect would be lost if people just started coming out of the class rooms pumped with the knowledge of graffiti. the fact alone you go out, get up and learn from your own intuition is respectable. One thing you can't be tought is imigination, uniqueness and your own style which is essential in graff.

I know tons of writers who are in school now. I think it's fuckin dope that they aren't wasting their lives anymore, racking paint, gettin blowed and bombin.I mean...they still do all that shit, but now they can have a CAREER and something to fall on and something to support their families.

Now, onto what you ppl are actually TALKING about. You cats are SO fucking hiphop it's amazing. You complain how no one gives it props, but when it gets at least an inkling of respect you say it sucks and is not hardcore and now ANYONE can do it. Of course no one should teach style and shit like that, it should be developed , but imagine how the world would be if cats like many of you invented the tv and started the 1st tv station. It would be like "oh hell yea, this shit is fuckin bomb! We are so cool and so creative and so smart" then when other pepl get interested in it and want it to be a normal thing it would be like "naw,yo..then it wouldn't just be ours...it wouldn't be true to the street knaamean~!"

But anyway..anything that opens more ppl up to graf and decreases ignorance...even a little bit is dope.

i think going to art school and doing graffiti are two completely different things.....i plan on going to art school when i graduate, but my art and my graffiti are two seperate things.....sure it would be easy to throw some paint at a wall and say its "abstract" style, but that just isnt my way of doing things.....art fags to me are the ones that cannot rock a straight letter and use abstract styles as a crutch for not being a good graffiti writer.....

Classes on Graffiti?......that is horrible.

Going to school?......furthers your inspiration to create.

people who use "abstract" styles to make up for lack of letter forms are not to be considered "graffiti writers"........that is bullshit, and you know it.

dude whatever, as long as you are having fun do what you want to do. I wouldn't mind taking a class on can handling or something, if just to increase my knowledge.

On the other hand, I would never take a class on piecing or bombing, since I feel like the Police could be in that class, and be screwing me over before I even hit a wall...

i'm doing a graff course at the moment, actually it's more of a 'heres paint theres a wall, ask if you want some ideas' sort of thing, i also went to a airosole history talk with a guy called mistery, it was fuckin sick he's a full old school aussie writer, and knows everything.

theres nothing wrong with graff courses, personally i like the free paint and the opportunity to do some legal walls around the community for the local council. i got a mate doing a graphic design course and it has helped his graff heaps. it may not be the traditional way of progreesing your skills but times have changed, and we need to change too. thats my opinion, each to their own.
