socrates
What exactly makes you a martyr, is everyone that doesn't die by natural causes by default become a martyr?
KaBar
Getting roasted on a spit because you won't give up your beliefs or your principles, that's martyrdom. Maybe getting drawn-and-quartered. Or at least burned at the stake. But getting killed throwing rocks at tanks or whatever just seems kind of dumb. The Palestinians throw rocks, the Israelis shoot back tear gas and rubber bullets, then tomorrow we do it all again. Dumb. I believe I'd immigrate to Jordan or Syria, and open an Internet coffee shop. Or maybe I'd move to New Jersey, get a job at a chemical plant, and bitch about Israel for thirty years, waiting for retirement. Or maybe I'd move to Texas and open a series of automotive repair shops called Mirage Collision Repair, with a picture of a camel on the sign. But I would most definately not remain in the West Bank throwing stones at armed Israeli Reserve troops. It doesn't pay the rent, so to speak. US gves more money to ISrael than to ANY other country in the world. Egypt gets shit. From the Camp David peace accords in 1978 until 2000 (the latest year for which figures are available), the United States has subsidized Egypt's armed forces with over $38 billion worth of aid. Egypt receives about $2 billion annually--$1.3 billion in foreign military financing and about $815 million in economic support fund assistance --making it the second largest regular recipient of conventional U.S. military and economic aid, after Israel. In 1990, the United States also forgave $7.1 billion in past Egyptian military debt in return for Egypt's support of Operation Desert Shield. In addition, Egypt receives excess defense articles worth hundreds of millions of dollars annually from the Pentagon. The announcement that 23,000 U.S. troops will be based in Egypt to conduct biannual military training exercises (Operation Bright Star) may have longer term implications for U.S. aid to the region, as might Egypt's willingness to support U.S. efforts against the Taliban. Though the 1990s have brought economic improvements, Egypt is still poor, with an estimated 2000 annual GDP-per-capita of $3,600. In 1999, Egypt spent 2.7 percent of its gross national product and $2.508 billion in constant 1998 U.S. dollars on its military. Guest BROWNer
booo this is the issue that should be dealt with immediately, instead of iraq, iran, syria, north korea, and anyone else the US feels like yapping off too, but, surprise surprise, curiously it's not. the israelis would LOVE if the palestinians moved, that is definitely a part of this current policy, and one that they are probably banking on, to make life such utter hell for palestinians that eventually they will actually leave the contested areas and let israel fully annex the territory becuz of the extreme conditions they are constantly subjected to. you're talking about people with fucking rocks kabar, the palestinians don't throw rocks, and then the israeli military politely bangs off a few tear gas bomblets and some rubber bullets, they fire rockets into apartment buildings and prey on rock throwing kids. nice of you to omit the daily use of live rounds on people that throw rocks at tanks. not gunships and state of the art weaponry, fucking pebbles and rocks. what is with your a to b logic? that chip on your shoulder is mighty.
