Do you need school to be a prop guy?

Nope. Most schools don't even have a class, let alone a program, to learn prop work. It's more like a skilled trade or craft, learned basically in an apprentice- style fashion.

I just started out by helping out on film sets, did PA work for a while, and then started trying to do exclusively art department stuff. Eventually, I found a couple of art directors/ prop masters who took me under their wing and put me on as their assistant for a while. I learned the ropes, and then started landing my own gigs.
